Facebook – There was a problem with the image file

Often I get this error when I try and upload a simple image to Facebook: “There was a problem with the image file” even with small files (e.g. 127K .jpg)

There is no useful info in the error message but I resized the image down to 90% and then it worked.

Strangely, I then tried to upload the original 100% size image again and it worked.

Go figure.

The True Cause why Facebook gives us “There was a problem with the image file”:

When a Captcha is Impending a Status Post with an Attached Photos, we will get “There was a problem with the image file”

    1. On the Wall, click “Status”

    2. Write a status post with a link that Facebook doesn’t YET trust. This link must be able to trigger the Captcha Dialog.

    3. Click “Photo”, and browse to a perfectly OK photo.

    4. Post the update. Facebook can’t display the CAPTCHA anymore, and it displays “There was a problem with the image file”.

COROLLARY: If you remove the links in the status, the Photo gets uploaded successfully!!!

The True Cause why Facebook gives us “There was a problem with the image file”:

When you post a photo to the wall, accompanied with a Status Post containing CAPTCHA-Trigerring links (links not yet trusted by Facebook), then we get the “There was a problem with the image file” error upon posting that Photo.

    1. On the Wall, click “Status”

    2. Write a status post with a link that Facebook doesn’t YET trust. This link must be able to trigger the CAPTCHA Dialog.

    3. Click “Photo”, and browse to a perfectly OK photo.

    4. Post the update. Facebook can’t display the CAPTCHA anymore, and it displays “There was a problem with the image file” instead.

COROLLARY: If you remove the links in the status, the Photo gets uploaded successfully!!!

WORKAROUND #1: Add the Photo to an existing Album, then paste the description later. The Photo won’t get any errors!

WORKAROUND #2: Post the photo to you wall, but don’t put a status yet. The photo will successfully be uploaded! Now, edit the photo’s caption.

I had luck with turning off the location. Once that happened, I was able to post and upload photos.

  5. Make certain you are uploading a file format other then png. When this happened to me I merely changed file type to .jpg and it uploaded without incident. Good luck

Renaming the photo did not work for me, but changing it from a .jpg to a .tif did work every time. It was a little slower loading – but it worked!
